Hydrosophist is a combat ability, that utilises magic known as hydrosophy, and is essential for learning and casting hydrosophist skills as well as crucial determining factor of the effectiveness of water based weapons and ammunition in Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Description
editCharacteristics
editHydrosophist combat ability focuses on dealing water damage, which is resisted by File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic Armour and File:Water Resistance Icon.png Water Resistance. Magic Armour prevents negative status effects from affecting characters whereas Water Resistance directly lowers water damage done. The reduction is based on percentage, therefore character with + 10 % water resistance will receive 10 % less water damage.
Hydrosophist combat ability is by default used by 2 preset classes. The Cleric, which is a mage preset class, who uses Hydrosophist alongside Necromancer combat ability and the Enchanter, which is a mage preset class, who uses Hydrosophist alongside Aerotheurge combat ability.
Hydrosophist on its own offers 7 support skills, 1 utility skill and 7 offensive skills. Craftable skills that include Hydrosophist offer 10 support (2 are incarnate infusions) and 2 offensive skills. Overall Hydrosophist offers 17 support skills, 9 offensive skills and 1 utility skill.
Hydrosophist ability on its own increases water damage from all sources by 5 % per each point invested. Note that in order to learn all Hydrosophist skills, the character needs 5 points in Hydrosophist (either by investment or by bonuses from items).
- Water Damage, Healing and Magic Armour Restoration Bonus per point in Hydrosophist
| Level | Damage Boost (%) | Level | Damage Boost (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 2 | 10 |
| 3 | 15 | 4 | 20 |
| 5 | 25 | 6 | 30 |
| 7 | 35 | 8 | 40 |
| 9 | 45 | 10 | 50 |
Damage of Hydrosophist Skills
editDamage in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is calculated through this exact formula: Damage = (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus% + Misc Bonuses% [if attack]) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus% [if spell])
Due to skills under Hydrosophist ability being spells they all use the following formula for damage: (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus %) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus %). Additionaly they cannot be cast if caster is affected by File:Silenced.png Silenced and File:Enraged.png Enraged status effects.
Simply put for the water damage done by Hydrosophist skills the most crucial elements are: Level of the caster, Hydrosophist ability, Intelligence attribute, High Ground bonus and Critical Hit bonus.
Hydrosophist skills DO NOT rely on the base damage done by weapons. However weapons affect damage done if they provide boost to any of the above mentioned elements that affect water damage done.
Therefore in order to boost damage done by Hydrosophist skills it is crucial to increase: Level, Hydrosophist, Intelligence, High Ground Bonus, Critical Hit Bonus. If possible it is wise to lower the water resistance of enemies. Note that bonus to damage provided by Intelligence is smaller than bonus provided by Hydrosophist ability.
- Healing the Undead
Hydrosophist skills scale on Hydrosophist due to them being based on restoring Vitality or dealing water damage, however in the case of Undead it works slightly differently. Skills that will heal the living such as Restoration, Cleanse Wounds, Healing Tears, Steam Lance and Mass Cleanse Wounds will instead of restoring Vitality deal physical damage to the Undead. This damage is affected by both Hydrosophist, as it is considered as "healing", and Warfare as it is physical damage. Note that any damage reflected this way back to the "living" caster will restore Vitality instead of causing further damage.
Surfaces and Status Effects
editHydrosophist ability is focuses on mastering water. Therefore those who use it are most commonly capable of creating water and ice surfaces, which can be further enhanced into cursed water and holy water surfaces as well as cursed ice and blessed ice surfaces. Water surface can also be easily turned into Steam cloud if it comes into contact with any form of fire. Likewise ice can be melted into water surface.
Hydrosophist skills are also capable of causing a variety of status effects. Below is a table listing all effects caused by Hydrosophist combat ability skills.
Traders
editFollowing table shows all NPCs who are guaranteed to sell hydrosophist skillbooks, with their location and coordinates in the right column, from them. The location shown in the table (and the coordinates) are only for the initial location the NPC is in. Note that some of these may have other skillbooks and goods to sell. Almira may follow the Godwoken on Lady Vengeance if her demands are met. Also note that Lizard Dreamer requires a persuasion check to be passed in order to speak with him, otherwise he (and the whole encampment) will turn hostile.

Hydrosophist Skills
editAbility Based
editFollowing tables and sub-sections show hydrosophist skills that can be learnt by character if they have enough point in Hydrosophist ability. All of these skills can be crafted by combining corresponding scroll with blank water skillbook or high tier blank water skillbook. Note that not all skills have craftable scrolls. In base game (without cheats) skills from 9 level onward (Adept, Expert and Master tiers) can be gained only after escaping Reaper's Eye island.
Each skill belongs to a tier that is determined through characters level that determines whether it can be found and purchased and requires certain level in Hydrosophist ability in order to memorise the skill. Higher Tier skills may require more memory in order to use them in combat, this especially applies to skills that require Source in order to cast them.

Craftable
editFollowing skillbooks are classified as craftable for they can be obtained only by crafting them. They cannot be bought from any trader in the game. However it is possible to get them as quest reward or find them as random loot.
Base skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Hydrosophist skillbook is combined with another non-source skillbook. Resulting skillbook will be a mix of both skillbooks and will require investment in both combat abilities under which the skillbooks belong. Example: In order to learn and cast Healing Tears, character needs 1 point in both Hydrosophist and Polymorph combat abilities.
Source skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Hydrosophist skillbook is combined with source skillbook and vice versa. One way or another there has to be source skillbook involved in crafting otherwise the resulting book will be non-source skillbook. Like base craftable skillbooks these also cannot be bought from traders in game.

Following table also includes skills exclusive to Gift Bag features such as Pet Power which allows player character to cast Infusions unto any summoned creature. These infusions sometimes grant unique skills unseen in the base game.

Runes
editAll equipment that has rune slots can be inserted with runes that will grant them additional properties. Most important rune for all who rely on Hydrosophist ability is the Frost Rune, which increases not only water damage when inserted into weapon but also Movement when inserted into necklace and ring. Lastly the Frost Rune grants File:Water Resistance Icon.png Water Resistance when inserted into armour. If the base Frost Rune of any size is put into rune frame it will gain additional effects.
Mystical Frost Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Leadership (if inserted into armour), Single-Handed (if inserted into weapon) and Hydrosophist (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect.
Frost Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Intelligence (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
