Summoning is a combat ability, that utilises magic known as summoning, and is essential for learning and casting Summoning skills in Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Description
editCharacteristics
editSummoning combat ability allows character to streghten their summoned creatures and totems. Summoning combat ability has the widest array of damage types, ranging from elemental to physical damage. This depends on whether caster uses skills to deal damage directly (in which case it is random damage type) or relies on their summoned creatures and totems. The damage types that can be caused by offensive skills and summoned creatures are:
| Damage | Armour | Resistance | Surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic | File:Fire Resistance Icon.png Fire | Fire |
| Air | File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic | File:Air Resistance Icon.png Air | Electrified Blood/Ice/Water |
| Earth | File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic | File:Earth Resistance Icon.png Earth | Oil |
| Poison | File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic | File:Poison Resistance Icon.png Poison | Poison |
| Water | File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic | File:Water Resistance Icon.png Water | Water/Ice |
| Physical | File:Physical Armour Icon.png Physical | Physical | Blood |
Summoning combat ability is by default used by 1 preset class. The Conjurer, which is a mage preset class, who uses Summoning alongside Leadership combat ability.
Summoning on its own offers 2 summon spells, 10 support spells and 3 offensive spells. Craftable spells that include Summoning offer 8 supportive spells. Overall Summoning offers 18 support spells, 3 offensive spells, utility spells and 2 summon spells.
Summoning ability on its own empowers summoned entities by increasing their Vitality, Physical Armour, Magic Armour and Damage. The bonus is derived from the amount of Vitality, Armour and Damage values of the summoner. The amount of points in Summoning indicates how large the derived bonus will be. Whether it will be only 30 % (equal to 3 points in Summoning) or 100 % (equal to 10 points in Summoning). In order to learn all Summoning spells, the character needs 5 points in Summoning (either by investment or by bonuses from items).
- Table of Vitality, Armour and Damage bonuses per point in Summoning
| Level | Vitality, Armour and Damage Bonuses | Level | Vitality, Armour and Damage Bonuses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | + 10 % | 2 | + 20 % |
| 3 | + 30 % | 4 | + 40 % |
| 5 | + 50 % | 6 | + 60 % |
| 7 | + 70 % | 8 | + 80 % |
| 9 | + 90 % | 10 | + 100 % |
Damage of Summoning Skills
editDamage in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is calculated through this exact formula: Damage = (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus% + Misc Bonuses% [if attack]) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus% [if spell])
Due to skills under Summoning ability being spells they all use the following formula for damage: (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus %) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus %)
Since Summoning provides bonus Vitality, Damage and Armour to summoned creature, the character investing in Summoning cannot boost their summoned creatures and totems by investing in other combat abilities as they provide bonus solely to the character who has points in them. Arguably it may be best to invest points in other combat abilities so that character can create surfaces, further boost their summoned creature or deal additional damage.
Therefore the most crucial elements for damage of Summoning skills themselves are: Level of the caster, Summoning ability, Intelligence attribute, High ground bonus and Critical Hit bonus.
Summoning skills DO NOT rely on the base damage done by weapons. However weapons affect damage done if they provide boost to any of the corresponding damage dealt. If weapon grants bonus to Summoning it will improve the summoned creature as well.
Surfaces and Status Effects
editSummoning ability skills focus on transforming the body of caster or their chosen foe as well as changing their surroundings. Summoning skills are also capable of causing a variety of status effects. Below is a table listing all effects caused by Summoning combat ability skills and craftable skills.

Summoning Skills
editAbility Based
editFollowing tables and sub-sections show Summoning spells that can be learnt by character if they have enough point in Summoning ability. All of these spells can be crafted by combining corresponding scroll with blank summoning skillbook or high tier blank summoning skillbook. Note that not all spells have craftable scrolls. In base game (without cheats) spells from 9 level onward (Adept, Expert and Master tiers) can be gained only after escaping Reaper's Eye island.
Each spell belongs to a tier that is determined through characters level that determines whether it can be found and purchased and requires certain level in Summoning ability in order to memorise the spell. Higher Tier spells may require more memory in order to use them in combat, this especially applies to spells that require Source in order to cast them.

Craftable
editFollowing skillbooks are classified as craftable for they can be obtained only by crafting them. They cannot be bought from any trader in the game. However it is possible to get them as quest reward or find them as random loot.
Base skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Summoning skillbook is combined with another non-source skillbook. Resulting skillbook will be a mix of both skillbooks and will require investment in both combat abilities under which the skillbooks belong. Example: In order to learn and cast Fire Infusion, character needs 1 point in both Pyrokinetic and Summoning combat abilities.
Source skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Summoning skillbook is combined with source skillbook and vice versa. One way or another there has to be source skillbook involved in crafting otherwise the resulting book will be non-source skillbook. Like base craftable skillbooks these also cannot be bought from traders in game.
List of Summons
editFollowing table shows a list of all available summons in the game (including the ones exclusive to Origin characters and their personal quests). All of these summons are affected by the Summoning combat ability.

Items
editWhile, the Summoning combat ability does not affect damage done by caster, items such as arrows and grenades that create surfaces can prove useful to Summoner who wishes to infuse their incarnate with water without having to learn the skill needed for it. Note that it is not possible to use Source, Webbed, Lava or cursed/blessed surfaces to infuse Incarnate.
Equipment
editSummoning combat ability is best paired with weapons that create surfaces ie. wands and equipment that increases Intelligence attribute, alongside Summoning combat ability.

Runes
editAll equipment that has rune slots can be inserted with runes that will grant them additional properties. Most important runes for all who rely on Summoning combat ability and high amount of Physical/Magic Armour are the Masterwork Rune and Venom Rune.
The Masterwork Rune increases physical damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Physical Armour Icon.png Physical Armour if inserted into armour instead. Lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic Armour. Mystical Masterwork Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Constitution (if inserted into armour), Wits (if inserted into weapon) and Memory (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Masterwork Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Strength (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
Venom Rune increases poison damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Poison Resistance Icon.png Poison Resistance if inserted into armour. And lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase Accuracy. Mystical Venom Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Summoning (if inserted into armour), Perseverance (if inserted into weapon) and Necromancer (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Venom Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Finesse (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
