Polymorph is a combat ability, that utilises magic known as metamorphosis, and is essential for learning and casting Polymorph skills in Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Description
[edit | edit source]Characteristics
[edit | edit source]Polymorph combat ability allows character to invest more points into their chosen attributes instead of directly increasing damage done by Polymorph skills. Most of the offensive Polymorph skills focus on dealing physical damage, which is resisted by File:Physical Armour Icon.png Physical Armour and Physical Resistance and earth damage which is resisted by File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic Armour and File:Earth Resistance Icon.png Earth Resistance. Physical Armour prevents negative status effects from affecting characters whereas Physical Resistance directly lowers physical damage done. The reduction is based on percentage, therefore character with + 10 % physical resistance will receive 10 % less physical damage. Same applies earth damage in relation to Magic Armour and Earth Resistance.
Polymorph combat ability is by default used by 2 preset classes. The Metamorph, which is a survivor preset class, who uses Polymorph alongside Two-Handed combat ability and the Shadowblade, which is a survivor preset class, who uses Polymorph alongside Scoundrel combat ability.
Polymorph on its own offers 6 support spells, 1 summon spells, 3 utility spells and 5 offensive spells. Craftable spells that include Polymorph offer 1 offensive spell and 7 supportive spells. Overall Polymorph offers 13 support spells, 6 offensive spells, 3 utility spells and 1 summon spell.
Polymorph ability on its own grants additional 1 attribute point per each point in it. Character with 3 points in Polymorph will have additional 3 points which they may freely allocate to any attribute of their choice. Note that in order to learn all Polymorph spells, the character needs 5 points in Polymorph (either by investment or by bonuses from items).

| 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |

Damage of Polymorph Skills
[edit | edit source]Damage in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is calculated through this exact formula: Damage = (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus% + Misc Bonuses% [if attack]) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus% [if spell])
Due to skills under Polymorph ability being spells they all use the following formula for damage: (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus %) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus %)
Since Polymorph provides a single free attribute point per point invested in the combat skill it does not increase damage done by Polymorph skills. Instead Polymorph skills that deal earth damage scale with Geomancer combat ability and Polymorph skills that deal physical damage scale with Warfare combat ability.
Therefore the most crucial elements for damage of Polymorph skills themselves are: Level of the caster, Warfare/Geomancer ability, Strength attribute, High ground bonus and Critical Hit bonus.
Polymorph is the only "magic" based combat ability whose skills are associated with Strength attribute.
Polymorph skills DO NOT rely on the base damage done by weapons. However weapons affect damage done if they provide boost to any of the above mentioned elements that affect physical damage or earth damage done.
Surfaces and Status Effects
[edit | edit source]Polymorph ability skills focus on transforming the body of caster or their chosen foe as well as changing their surroundings. Polymorph skills are also capable of causing a variety of status effects. Below is a table listing all effects caused by Polymorph combat ability skills and craftable skills.
Traders
[edit | edit source]Following table shows all NPCs who are guaranteed to sell Polymorph spellbooks, with their location and coordinates in the right column, from them. The location shown in the table (and the coordinates) are only for the initial location the NPC is in. Note that some of these may have other spell/skillbooks and goods to sell.

Polymorph Skills
[edit | edit source]Ability Based
[edit | edit source]Following tables and sub-sections show Polymorph spells that can be learnt by character if they have enough point in Polymorph ability. All of these spells can be crafted by combining corresponding scroll with blank polymorph skillbook or high tier blank polymorph skillbook. Note that not all spells have craftable scrolls. In base game (without cheats) spells from 9 level onward (Adept, Expert and Master tiers) can be gained only after escaping Reaper's Eye island.
Each spell belongs to a tier that is determined through characters level that determines whether it can be found and purchased and requires certain level in Polymorph ability in order to memorise the spell. Higher Tier spells may require more memory in order to use them in combat, this especially applies to spells that require Source in order to cast them.

Craftable
[edit | edit source]Following skillbooks are classified as craftable for they can be obtained only by crafting them. They cannot be bought from any trader in the game. However it is possible to get them as quest reward or find them as random loot.
Base skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Polymorph skillbook is combined with another non-source skillbook. Resulting skillbook will be a mix of both skillbooks and will require investment in both combat abilities under which the skillbooks belong. Example: In order to learn and cast Bleed Fire, character needs 1 point in both Pyrokinetic and Polymorph combat abilities.
Source skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Polymorph skillbook is combined with source skillbook and vice versa. One way or another there has to be source skillbook involved in crafting otherwise the resulting book will be non-source skillbook. Like base craftable skillbooks these also cannot be bought from traders in game.

These infusions sometimes grant unique skills unseen in the base game.
Note that while the following skills: Bull Rush, Flight, Petrifying Visage and Spin Web are classified as "Monster Skills" in Game Master Mode they can be temporarily obtained by the Player Character if they cast on themselves specific Polymorph skills.

[edit | edit source]While, the Polymorph combat ability does not affect damage done (only provides bonus attribute points for the caster) its spells mostly scale with either Warfare and Geomancer, as such it may be paired with items that deal physical damage, earth damage or poison damage this includes arrows and grenades. Additionaly it is possible to affect Polymorph, Warfare and Geomancer abilities themselves through equipment and runes.
Ammunition
[edit | edit source]Following arrows and grenades are magical items that can be used both in and outside of combat to cause physical damage, earth damage or poison damage. All of the following arrows and grenades are empowered by Warfare combat ability or Geomancer combat ability. Note that in order to use arrows, character must have bow or crossbow equipped.

Runes
[edit | edit source]All equipment that has rune slots can be inserted with runes that will grant them additional properties. Most important runes for all who rely on Warfare/Geomancer combat abilities (in terms of damage and resistances bonuses provided) are the Masterwork Rune and Rock Rune.
The Masterwork Rune increases physical damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Physical Armour Icon.png Physical Armour if inserted into armour instead. Lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic Armour. Mystical Masterwork Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Constitution (if inserted into armour), Wits (if inserted into weapon) and Memory (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Masterwork Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Strength (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
The Rock Rune increases earth damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Earth Resistance Icon.png Earth Resistance if inserted into armour instead. Lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase Vitality by set amount. Mystical Rock Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Warfare (if inserted into armour), Two-Handed (if inserted into weapon) and Geomancer (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Rock Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Strength (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
