Non-player characters
More actions
Non-player characters (NPCs) are characters not controlled by the player. They populate the world of Rivellon and range from friendly companions and traders to hostile enemies encountered throughout the four acts.
Types of NPC
editNPCs can be divided into several archetypes that are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
Companions
editOrigin Companions
editOrigin companions are playable characters with rich backstories and personal quests. They can be recruited on the Merryweather and at Fort Joy, and each may also be selected as the player's main character during character creation.
The six origin companions are: Fane, Ifan ben-Mezd, Lohse, Beast, Sebille, and The Red Prince.
Mercenaries
editMercenaries are additional companions hired from Sergeant Zrilla aboard The Lady Vengeance starting from Act Two. They have preset classes and abilities but can be customised via the Magic Mirror.
Temporary Companions
editTemporary companions join the party under specific circumstances and leave once certain conditions are met. Examples include Alexandar (in the Arena of the One) and Saheila (after defeating Roost Anlon).
Traders
editTraders are NPCs with expanded inventories and gold reserves who buy and sell goods. They are commonly found in settlements such as Fort Joy, Driftwood, and Arx. Some companions, such as Fane and Lohse, can also serve as traders with the right civil abilities.
Notable traders include Fara, Tarquin, Bree, and Jawbone.
Questgivers
editMany NPCs across Rivellon offer quests to the party. Some quests are given through dialogue, while others are triggered by discovering items, overhearing conversations, or encountering specific situations.
Hostile NPCs
editHostile NPCs are adversaries encountered during exploration and quests. They belong to various factions and creature types. Almost any NPC can become hostile if sufficiently provoked.
Faction NPCs
editMany NPCs belong to the major factions of Rivellon:
- Divine Order
- The dominant religious and military organisation, led by Alexandar. Internally divided into:
- The Magisters – Tasked with hunting and containing Sourcerers. Primary antagonists throughout Act One and Act Two.
- Paladins – The oldest faction within the Order, serving as protectors of Arx and the Paladin checkpoint. Not inherently hostile to the party.
- Seekers – Former paladins who oppose the Magisters' methods, led by Gareth.
- Black Ring
- Cultists who serve the God King. They appear primarily in Act Three and Act Four as major enemies.
- Sworn
- Beings who have sworn their souls to the God King in exchange for power. With few exceptions, always hostile to the Godwoken.
Common Citizens
editThese NPCs populate settlements and the wider world, creating a sense of a living environment. They often have limited dialogue but may provide lore, side quests, or items. They appear as members of the various races of Rivellon – Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Lizards.
NPCs by act
editThe tutorial takes place aboard the Merryweather, where the player first meets all six origin companions and several Magisters.
Act One spans Fort Joy, the Fort Joy Beach, the Hollow Marshes, and surrounding areas on Reaper's Eye. Key NPCs include Griff, High Judge Orivand, Dallis, Kniles, and many prisoners and Magisters.
Act Two covers the Reaper's Coast, including Driftwood, Cloisterwood, Bloodmoon Island, the Blackpits, and many other locations. Key NPCs include Lohar, Hannag, Ryker, Jahan, and Mordus.
Act Three takes place on The Nameless Isle, featuring encounters with Black Ring forces, Eternal constructs, and the Academy of the Seven.
The final act is set in the city of Arx. Key NPCs include Lord Linder Kemm, Isbeil, Lord Arhu, and the forces of the Divine Order and Black Ring.
