Huntsman is a combat ability, based on non-magical skill known as ranging and is essential for memorising and using huntsman skills as well as crucial factor of the effectiveness of high ground damage bonus in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Description

edit

Characteristics

edit

Huntsman combat ability allows character to use more effectively the height advantage provided by the environment. This height advantage allows character to deal more devastating attacks when using any ranged attacks (ie. skills, items etc.)

Huntsman combat ability is by default used by 2 preset classes both of which are of the survivor category. The Ranger who uses Huntsman alongside Pyrokinetic combat ability and the Wayfarer who relies additionaly on Geomancer combat ability in addition to Huntsman.

Huntsman on its own offers 2 support skill, 1 mobility skill, and 12 offensive skills. Craftable skills that include Huntsman offer 4 supportive skills and 4 offensive skills. Overall Huntsman offers 1 mobility skill, 6 support skills, 16 offensive skills.

In order to learn all Huntsman skills, the character needs 5 points in Huntsman (either by investment or by bonuses from items).

Damage of Huntsman Skills

edit

Damage in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is calculated through this exact formula: Damage = (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus% + Misc Bonuses% [if attack]) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%) x ( 1 + Misc Bonus% [if spell])

Due to skills under Huntsman ability being weapon-based skills they all use the following formula for damage: Damage = (Base Damage) x (1 + Elemental Bonus%) x (1 + Attribute Bonus% + Weapon Skill Bonus% + Misc Bonuses%) x (1 + High Ground Bonus% + Crit Bonus%)

Huntsman ability on its own boosts damage bonus provided by the high ground. Huntsman does not increase damage done by its skills the same way other combat abilities do (ie. in the damage calculation formula they do not take the role of "Elemental Bonus%"). Instead the damage of most Huntsman skills is affected by Warfare as they do physical damage.

Huntsman skills RELY on the base damage done by weapons. In this case it is bows and crossbows as they are required in order to cast the skills. Weapons also additionaly affect damage done if they provide boost to any of the corresponding damage dealt. If weapon grants bonus to Warfare it will improve physical damage done when that weapon is equipped.

Therefore the most crucial elements for damage of Huntsman skills themselves are: Level of the caster, Warfare ability, Finesse attribute, High Ground bonus and Critical Hit bonus.

Surfaces and Status Effects

edit

Huntsman ability skills focus on ranged attacks and utilisation of higher ground advantage.

Huntsman skills, like skills from other combat abilities are also capable of inflicting both harmful and beneficial status effects. Below is a table listing all effects caused by Huntsman combat ability skills and craftable skills.

Huntsman Skills

edit

Ability Based

edit

Following tables and sub-sections show Huntsman skills that can be learnt by character if they have enough points in Huntsman ability. Note that as these are weapon-based skills it is not possible to craft either scrolls or skillbooks for them. In base game (without cheats) skills from 9 level onward (Adept, Expert and Master tiers) can be gained only after escaping Reaper's Eye island.

Each skill belongs to a tier that is determined through characters level that determines whether it can be found and purchased and requires certain level in Huntsman ability in order to memorise the skill. Higher Tier skills may require more memory in order to use them in combat, this especially applies to spells that require Source in order to cast them.

Craftable

edit

Following skillbooks are classified as craftable for they can be obtained only by crafting them. They cannot be bought from any trader in the game. However it is possible to get them as quest reward or find them as random loot.

Base skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Huntsman skillbook is combined with another non-source skillbook. Resulting skillbook will be a mix of both skillbooks and will require investment in both combat abilities under which the skillbooks belong. Example: In order to learn and cast Throw Explosive Trap, character needs 1 point in both Pyrokinetic and Huntsman combat abilities.

Source skillbooks are obtained whenever non-source Huntsman skillbook is combined with source skillbook and vice versa. One way or another there has to be source skillbook involved in crafting otherwise the resulting book will be non-source skillbook. Like base craftable skillbooks these also cannot be bought from traders in game.

Other Skills

edit

In general outside of player accesible and craftable skills, there are skills exclusive to NPCs. Some of these are also accessible in Game Master Mode. With the addition of Gift Bags several more skills appeared in the game (note that these are not available in the Classic Edition of the game).

For Huntsman combat ability however, there are no NPC (or monster) skills in Game Master. The Gift Bag: Pet Power provides poison infused Hungry Flower a Huntsman skill Acid Sparks and while it is classified as a Huntsman skill it scales with Geomancer.

Items

edit

While, the Huntsman combat ability affects damage done only through the high ground bonus, its skills scale only with Warfare and as such it may be paired with items that deal physical damage.

Ammunition

edit

Following arrows and grenades are magical items that can be used both in and outside of combat to cause physical damage. All of the following arrows and grenades are empowered by Warfare combat ability. Note that in order to use arrows, character must have bow or crossbow equipped.

Equipment

edit

Huntsman combat ability is best paired with weapons that cause long range physical damage. Considering the weapon requirement the most adequate weapons are bows and crossbows which are neccessary for many Huntsman skills. Since these skills cause physical damage it is recommended to pair Huntsman equipment with equipment that grants bonus to Warfare. Note that bows and crossbows rely on Finesse attribute.

Runes

edit

All equipment that has rune slots can be inserted with runes that will grant them additional properties. Most important runes for all who rely on Huntsman combat ability is the Masterwork Rune and the Flame Rune.

The Masterwork Rune increases physical damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Physical Armour Icon.png Physical Armour if inserted into armour instead. Lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase File:Magic Armour Icon.png Magic Armour. Mystical Masterwork Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Constitution (if inserted into armour), Wits (if inserted into weapon) and Memory (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Masterwork Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Strength (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.

The Flame Rune increases fire damage when inserted into weapon. However it will increase File:Fire Resistance Icon.png Fire Resistance if inserted into armour instead. Lastly, if inserted into necklace or ring, it will increase Critical Chance. Mystical Flame Rune of any size provides 1 point bonus to either Huntsman (if inserted into armour), Pyrokinetic (if inserted into weapon) and Ranged (if inserted into any necklace or ring) alongside its base effect. Flame Rune of Power of any size will always provide bonus to Intelligence (depending on its size) whenever inserted into any equipment.
