The Merryweather

From dos2.wiki

The Merryweather is a Lucian class frigate, operated by The Magisters to ferry Sourcerers to Fort Joy. It serves as the prologue and tutorial region to Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Overview

edit

The Merryweather is a frigate, sailing under the flag of the Divine Order, that serves the role of a transportation ship for Sourcerers and Magisters on their way to Fort Joy. At the start of the game it is transporting the origin characters Fane, Ifan ben-Mezd, Lohse, Sebille Kaleran, Marcus Miles and the Red Prince to Fort Joy alongside other sorcerers such as Trice, Windego, and any custom player characters. During the prologue Windego deliberately lures a Kraken to the ship by using source aboard. The Kraken attacks the ship, causing it to sink roughly 19km (10nm)[1] off the coast of Reaper's Eye; the island containing Fort Joy.

Hold

edit

Upon waking up, the player character finds themself fastened to a medical table, having just been fitted with a Source Collar. They are released from the table by Magister Siwan who will answer questions about the nature of the voyage before leaving for the upper decks. If the player character is undead, a grinning skull appears to warn them that they are liable to be attacked by living creatures if they go unveiled.

The player character may follow Siwan to the lower deck, or explore the hold. There are two paths aft, each blocked by locked doors. The starboard door can only be unlocked by a leaver on the other side. The key to the port door is hidden in a vase at X: 39 Y: -305. Past the door is a corridor with a second locked door at the far end that can be unlocked by interacting with the two pressure plates in front of it. The corridor also contains a letter from Siwan. Past the second door is the ship's stern and prison.

Inside the prison, a sleeping magister Rennart guards an imprisoned sorcerer named Hemwar, who asks to be freed if approached. The starboard door, leading from the prison to the laboratory, can be unlocked by a key carried by Rennart, or by picking. A set of Lockpicks are located in a barrel next to the door at X: 57 Y: -297. A Electric Discharge scroll can be collected from a nearby stool, and several healing potions can be looted from the laboratory. The door out of the laboratory is blocked by leaking poison barrel. This door has no key, and needs to be picked or destroyed, the latter of which can be accomplished by casting a pyrokinetic spell, or igniting the poison surface. The corridor on the far side leads back to the starting room through a final door which can be opened through the lever next to it.

Lower deck

edit

The stern contains the stairs[verify] from the lower deck, a hatch leading to the main deck that remains sealed until the Kraken attack, and a cabin where the option side-quest Death Belowdecks starts by interacting with Magister Waters, Magister Marel, and Magister Cadoc.

The six potential origin companions can be found in the central hold:

bedrolls can be found around the lower deck in the following locations:

  • Near the sheep in the fore-port corner
  • Near the door leading into the hold
  • On the lower bunk in the centre of the hold (2x)

Immediately to the port of Ifan, under the crate is a Greasy Key which opens the door to the scullery. In here, a Pocket Knife and various consumable items can be found. On the wall at the aft end of the scullery is a scroll from which six recipes can be learned: Boiled Potato, Cold Mashed Potatoes and 4 recipes for Mashed Potatoes.

Speaking to Magister Payde gives access to the Magisters' quarters, which occupy the stern of the deck. Inside Magisters William, Ygritte, and Yona are questioning the sorcerer Windego. Interacting with them prompts the Kraken attack. This room also contains a staircase leading to the middle deck.

Middle Deck

edit

Ricks and Murtof hide in a cabin at the stern. A Source Hound hides in a immediately fore and starboard of them. The corpses of Magister Ceri, Magister Priest Medwyn, and several unnamed magisters are spread across the deck. Medwyn's body is towards the fore end of the starboard corridor and contains a Skull-Marked Key and the Captain's Note. Fane is re-encountered at the fore end of the same corridor, now visibly undead. A skull-marked door leads from the center of the deck to a storage room occupying the bow of the deck, and can be unlocked with the key found on Medwyn. This room contains three barrels of Deathfog. As soon as the door is opened, the Kraken's testicles break through the hull, destroying the barrels, and filling the room with deathfog. There is a narrow window of opportunity during which all three barrels can be collected,[2] preventing the Kraken from breaking them. These are the only barrels available to the player before Act 2. The stairs to the main deck lie at the fore end of the port corridor.

Main deck

edit

Upon reaching the main deck, two viscous voidlings will attack. After eliminating them, head sternward towards the quarter deck and the Kraken will strike again, killing the Magister Knight steering the ship and captain Kalwyn. Continue on to the starboard side; opposite the hatch on the port side, there is a boat upon which to evacuate from the ship.

Notes

edit
  • Killing NPCs in the Tutorial deck does not yield any experience.
  • Killing the Godwoken will not affect their recruitment later, but their starting inventory can be taken.
