Demons are a race of powerful, cunning beings that reside on NemesisNemesis, a plane separate from Rivellon. They are encountered as enemies, allies, and traders – but never without an agenda of their own.

There is nothing I know better than demons, and you've long since moved beyond the stage of mere possession. Your soul is still yours only because it is Godwoken.
Jahan warning Lohse about Adramahlihk

Nature

edit

Demons are children of the Lord of ChaosLord of Chaos – the eighth lord, whose creations were banished from Rivellon along with their creator. They now reside on Nemesis but constantly seek to return to Rivellon or extend their influence through deals, possession, and summoning.

Demons are distinct from the Voidwoken. The God King, master of the Voidwoken, is described by The AdvocateThe Advocate as a creature older than any demon.[1] The God King and the demons are, in fact, enemies.[2]

True names

edit

Every demon has a true name, and knowing it grants power over that demon. A demon can only be summoned if one knows its true name, and the name is required to enter the demon's own dimension.[3] JahanJahan, the renowned demon hunter, devotes his life to uncovering these names. Of Adramahlihk, he says: He can do what he will, but one day his one true name I'll know, and so undo him.[4]

Possession

edit

Demons can possess mortals, coiling around their soul and exerting control. The most prominent example is Adramahlihk's possession of LohseLohse, a Godwoken whom the archdemon targeted to seize divinity for himself. Jahan warns that if a possessed person were to ascend to divinity, the demon, not she, would be a god. It would bring about the end of time and space and all creation as we know it.[5]

Vulnerability to the divine

edit

Demons are vulnerable to divine power. A simple blessing can cause harm to anyone with even a drop of demonic blood. MaladyMalady, a half-demon, experiences this firsthand. The sacred power of the Divine can even exorcise a demon from a possessed person through touch.[6]

Source and the barrier

edit

Source plays a crucial role in keeping demons confined to Nemesis. JahanJahan observes that Source makes for an excellent ally in matters of a demonic nature, and warns that without Source to shield it, the barriers between Nemesis and Rivellon weaken. The Void may be kept at bay. But the plane of demons is not.[7]
