Story
editIn 1242 AD, the use of Source magic has been forbidden as a danger to the world, for when it is used the Voidwoken follow shortly behind. Sourcerers are rounded up by the Divine Order – now under the authority of Lucian's son, Alexandar, following his father's death – and taken to Fort Joy on Reaper's Eye, the former bastion of the Sourcerer King Braccus Rex, for the supposed safety of Rivellon.
Unknown to those who have been collared and set aboard the ships to the island, this journey does not merely result in ostracism and incarceration – a far more sinister fate awaits many of those who land upon its shores. For a small number of the taken, however, there is a far grander future ahead.
Gameplay
editOriginal Sin 2 is a party-based RPG with tactical turn-based combat. The party explores the world from an isometric perspective, engaging in dialogue, solving puzzles, and fighting enemies across a rich, reactive environment.
At the beginning of the game, the player creates a character, choosing a race, appearance, preset, skills, attributes, and abilities, and talents. Players may also choose one of six origin characters – each with a unique backstory, personal quest, and exclusive dialogue – or create a fully custom character. Origin characters not selected by the player can be recruited as companions during the adventure.
In combat, each character takes turns to act, with Action Points limiting the type and number of actions that can be performed. Movement consumes Action Points based on distance, and attacks and skills consume them based on their requirements. Damage dealt to a target is mitigated by Physical and Magical Armor and any relevant resistances. The environment itself can be turned to the party's advantage or disadvantage; for example, a pool of water can be electrified, frozen into an ice sheet, or evaporated into steam to create hazards.
Acts
editThe game is divided into a Prologue and four acts, each covering a different region of Rivellon:
- Prologue – The Merryweather
- Act One – Reaper's Eye
- Act Two – Reaper's Coast
- Act Three – The Nameless Isle
- Act Four – Arx
Once an act has been completed, it is not possible to return to any previous areas. Items left behind at the time of departure are lost, unless stored on The Lady Vengeance, which serves as the party's mobile base from Act Two onward.
Definitive Edition
editDivinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition was released on 31 August 2018 as a comprehensive remaster of the original game. Players who owned the Classic Edition on PC received the update for free. The Definitive Edition is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iPad.
In addition to graphical and performance improvements, the Definitive Edition includes rewritten dialogue, new areas, new encounters, and a Story difficulty mode that allows players to focus on the narrative with less demanding combat. The companion Beast received a significantly expanded storyline with additional dialogue.
Players who pre-ordered the Definitive Edition on console received Sir Lora, a Squirrel Knight mini-companion with his own questline and animations. Sir Lora is pursued by the Knights of Drey, an apocalyptic order who believe in the coming of the Great Acorn.[2]
Gift bags
editFollowing the release of the Definitive Edition, Larian Studios released a series of free content packs known as Gift Bags. These include cosmetic options, quality-of-life features, new recipes, and additional quests. Five Gift Bags were released in total:
- Beauty Salon – Additional face types and hairstyles for all races and genders.
- Song of Nature – Features including Crafter's Kit, Endless Runner, Animal Empathy, Fort Joy Magic Mirror, 8 Action Points, and Herb Gardens.
- Order and Magic – Features including Pet Power, Nine Lives, Combat Randomiser, Hagglers, Sourcerous Sundries, and Improved Organisation.
- Sourceror Secrets – Features including From the Ashes, Source Meditation, Divine Talents, and Spirit Vision.
- The Four Relics of Rivellon – Four new equipment sets (Captain's Armour, Vulture Armour, Contamination Armour, and Devourer Armour) accompanied by new NPCs and quests.
Divine Ascension
editThe Divine Ascension add-on is a digital content pack rather than a game expansion. It includes the lore book Modern Chronicles of Reapers' Coast, the concept art book An Essential Compendium of Notable Rivellonian Artwork, the official soundtrack by Borislav Slavov, and additional concept art.
Development
editLarian Studios launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter on 26 August 2015. The campaign raised over $2,000,000 (including PayPal contributions) by its close on 30 September 2015. The game entered Early Access on Steam on 15 September 2016, with the full release following on 14 September 2017.
An upgraded version of the Divinity Engine is included with the game, enabling players to create custom adventures and campaigns. The engine features prominently through the Game Master Mode, which allows a player to act as a tabletop-style game master for other players.
The Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition was released on 31 August 2018, bringing the game to consoles alongside extensive improvements to the PC version.
