Hall of Echoes

From dos2.wiki

The Hall of Echoes is the afterlife realm in Divinity: Original Sin 2. It serves as the transition point between the mortal world of Rivellon and whatever lies beyond, and is the domain where the Seven Gods draw their power.

Overview

edit

The Hall of Echoes is the place where the souls of the dead travel after death. The Seven Gods consume these souls as a source of power, sustaining themselves through the worship and deaths of the mortal races they created. The Hall exists as a liminal space between the physical world and the Void.

Godwoken can visit the Hall of Echoes through ritual visions, where they commune with their patron god and receive guidance. These encounters typically occur at key moments in the story, providing lore and directing the Godwoken towards the next stage of their journey.

Accessing the Hall

edit

The Hall of Echoes is not a physical location that can be visited freely. Godwoken access it through a specific ritual: mixing Blackroot and blood drawn with an obsidian lancet, then burning the mixture in a special bowl and inhaling the smoke. This ritual transports the Godwoken's soul to the Hall, where they can commune with their patron god.

MaladyMalady also facilitates access to the Hall by anchoring The Lady Vengeance's soul in the Hall of Echoes, allowing the party to return at their leisure. However, travelling between the realms takes a toll – as Malady notes, it takes something from my soul each time.

Role in the story

edit

The Hall of Echoes plays a significant role throughout the game:

  • The Seven Gods communicate with their chosen Godwoken through visions in the Hall.
  • The Hall is where the power of Source originates and flows into Rivellon.
  • As the Void grows stronger, the gods within the Hall grow weaker – they eventually take refuge within the souls of their Godwoken to survive.
  • The God King attempts to breach the Hall from the Void, seeking to reclaim his former domain.
  • The outcome of the game's final act determines the fate of the Hall and the balance of power between the gods, the Void, and the mortal races.

Notes

edit
  • The gods' consumption of souls in the Hall is a central moral question of the game – the Godwoken must decide whether to perpetuate or dismantle this system.
  • In previous Divinity games, the Hall of Echoes served a similar function as the realm of the dead.
